Artist Statement

"Architecture is a rational, functional pursuit as well as a creative, conceptual pursuit. The design studio is often dominated by the functional requirements but what makes design meaningful is the conceptual strength and the artistic development of an idea. This pursuit of the conceptual, along with the mastery of craft needed to illustrate the concept, is the focus of my creative activity over the last eight years. The creative activity of this period is really only the most recent step in a lifelong dedication to the art that I now engage.

The structure of architectural detail, the scale and form of cabinetry and the concept of sculpture are the primary influences on my work. The boundaries are blurred and the result is, hopefully, an illustration of a personal view of all three sources of inspiration. The pieces that I have been showing compose a documentation of a process: a process of thought; a process of skill development; a process of design."

The artist is a licensed architect and maintans a studio at Southern Illinois University Carbondale where he teaches design studios in the School of Architecture. In addition to the work shown here, he is interested in the sustainability issues surrounding tropical hardwoods and the relationship between craftsmanship and creativity.
